Coins and medals with maritime motifs or ship illustrations were usually awarded on the occasion of anniversaries or as recognition and gratitude to rescuers from distress. These medals were issued by national rescue companies as well as shipping companies and port cities or states. The rescuer was not only given the medal but also a certificate.
